Having difficulty scoring beyond L1/L2 marks despite producing lengthy answers? Unable to understand and meet the requirements of questions that involve ‘inference with purpose’ or a combination of skills? Cannot craft an essay with a ‘reasoned argument and evaluation’?
Social Studies is a compulsory subject for students taking the ‘N’ and ‘O’ level examinations in Singapore. With 70% of the marks being allocated to the Source-Based Questions (SBQ), the new Social Studies syllabus focuses heavily the mastery of critical-thinking skills rather than sole memorization. In addition, the new Structured Response Questions (SRQ) section demands a greater level of engagement with and analysis of societal issues and requires students to come up with opinions and recommendations rather than simply memorise and regurgitate content from the textbooks. There are no ‘model answers’ when dealing with these questions. Rather, students will need to engage with issues critically.
These challenges and the unfamiliarity of the new syllabus may cause some to worry about their ability to acquire the required skills in order to do well in the subject. At Mulberry Education, our experienced humanities tutor can help students to become more confident and proficient in the subject!
Here’s a glimpse of what our lessons offer:
- Techniques for interpreting sources with easy-to-follow strategies to tackle the various skills in the SBQ.
- Guidance on how to develop thoughts into coherent arguments with relevant examples and logical elaboration for the SRQ.
- Individual attention and customized teaching to cater to the student’s weaknesses and needs.
- In-house materials and supplementary revision papers.
